School Air Purification Packages

How can we clean the air in our clssrooms

This page is presented due to a large amount of interest being shown by concerned school personnel and administrators. We at LakeAir are dedicated to promoting affordable clean air everywhere. The advent of COVID-19 ushered in a new reality in air purification. One sector of our lives that seems to be most affected is schools. Schools by their very nature have always been considered a breeding ground for viruses and other various infections. COVID-19 has brought our focus onto Air Quality. Exactly how COVID-19 is spread is still a topic of great debate. The most recent trends would lead us to believe that COVID-19 is spread by close contact with infected individuals. The idea of catching the virus from a surface is becoming less and less popular. The chief ways to keep safe that are currently being espoused is social distancing and reducing the bio-load (amount of COVID-19 in the air).
Schools are changing teaching methods, classroom sizes, scheduling, and other school activities to allow for more social distancing. Many schools will ask teachers and aids to wear masks to help reduce the bio-load. These methods are good first steps. Schools are also doing a better job of disinfecting surfaces and
other general maintenance practices all in the hopes of once again reducing the bio-load in the school.

IAQ (indoor air quality) and COVID-19

In these times we look to professionals to give us guidance on areas that we do not fully understand or have a general lack of knowledge in. For Indoor Air Quality we look to ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers), The CDC, and WHO. All three of these organizations are in general agreement on best practices for COVID-19. When it comes to indoor air quality ASHRAE takes the lead. In a position paper published in April of 2020 ASHRAE sets forth guidelines for health care and non-healthcare facilities. Schools fall mostly into the non-healthcare segment. Schools with sick rooms and medical rooms should treat those areas as health-care facilities.

• Increase outdoor air ventilation (disable demand-controlled ventilation and open outdoor air dampers to       100% as indoor and outdoor conditions permit).
• Improve central air and other HVAC filtration to MERV-13 (ASHRAE 2017b) or the highest level achievable.
• Keep systems running longer hours (24/7 if possible).
• Add portable room air cleaners with HEPA or high-MERV filters.
• Add duct- or air-handling-unit-mounted, upper room, and/or portable UVGI devices in connection to in-room   fans in high-density spaces such as waiting rooms, prisons, and shelters.
• Maintain temperature and humidity as applicable to the infectious aerosol of concern.
• Bypass energy recovery ventilation systems that leak potentially contaminated exhaust air back
   into the outdoor air supply.
• Design and build inherent capabilities to respond to emerging threats and plan and practice for them.

The LakeAir Brand has several products that can help schools achieve many of the goals recommended by ASHRAE, CDC, and WHO.

How LakeAir Can Help:

Portable HEPA and High MERV Air Purifiers:

The Maxum HEPA has a variable speed controller. This allows you to choose the perfect setting for your air purification needs. If the room air becomes extra dirty you can put the unit in turbo mode. At this speed you can clean the air in average classroom 5 times an hour. As the conditions improve , reduce the speed which saves money and lowers the noise level. The HEPA filter is a True HEPA. A True HEPA filter will remove all viruses, bacteria and other indoor air pollution from the air stream. The activated carbon filter is made with virgin carbon produced from coconut shells. This type of carbon is particularly suitable for odors and common VOCs found around the school.

LakeAir’s electrostatic filtering system works like a pollution magnet, trapping up to 97% of all airborne particles as small as 0.1 micron. The Maxum removes mold, dust mites, pet dander, bacteria, pollens and dust particles from the air. Electrostatic filters are equivalent to MERV 16 and are believed to remove 95% of COVID size particle. The activated carbon after filter helps to eliminate harmful VOCs and stubborn odors. Classrooms that use the Maxum electrostatic will receive 3 ACH of air purification which will greatly help those who suffer from asthma, hay fever, allergies and other respiratory ailments.

Upper-Air UVGI Filtration:

Sentry Upper Air UVGI Air Filter

The Sentry is the newest addition to the LakeAir product line. It provides 130 CFM of air sanitation to any classroom or hallway. This powerful unit will kill any microbial (virus) that enters it. The 376 µJ/cm² dose of ultraviolet germicidal irradiation is more than enough to kill any SARS type virus on contact.
The Sentry acts as a silent guard protecting your classrooms and hallways from unwanted biological attacks. This unit costs only $11.00 a year to run and should be left on 24/7. It has a modest size of 20 x 12 x 5. It is mounted at least 7 feet above the ground to ensure no UVC rays harm the students and staff below..

Permanent HEPA Air Purifiers:

The LAFC is a Ceiling Mounted HEPA Air Purifier. It is designed to fit into a 2×4 ceiling grid. It can be mounted or hung from any ceiling as well. The LAFC provides 750 CFM of ultra-clean air and will provide almost 8 ACH to the average-sized classroom. It is very quiet, only producing 48 dB(A) of sound at high speed.

The LAFC-HUV provides the highest level of air purification
and sanitation. A commercial HEPA filer is Paired with UVGI filtration. The dose from this powerful UVGI is over 700µJ / cm². This product would be an excellent choice in high-risk areas like medical and sick rooms.

HEPA and UVGI Bypass Systems:

If you have a good air handling system in your school that needs to upgrade its ability to filter the air, consider adding a Bypass / Air Scrubber to its functionality. An air scrubber will remove air from the system’s main ductwork, filter the air and return the air back to the system. We can add 1100 CFM of HEPA and UVGI cleaning power to your school’s existing HVAC unit. The Dual Electrostatic system can add 1800 CFM of MERV 16 clean air.

ASHRAE would like to see all existing systems to be upgraded to at least MERV 13. many times it is not feasible or even possible to do without spending 10’s of Thousands of dollars. The Bypass system maybe the best and most cost-effective way to address the needs of our new air filtration reality.
