Cigar Lounge Environment Calculator for Filtration and Ventilation
This is the same design tool we use to work through real cigar lounge projects. It does more than count smoke eaters. It keeps air purification, outdoor-air ventilation, acoustic comfort, equipment selection, and operating cost visible as separate decisions so you can see what changes when one assumption moves.
The calculator works through these parts of the project:
- Room dimensions: Length, width, and ceiling height establish floor area and room volume. Volume is the basis for air-change calculations.
- Mounting style: Ducted, wall-mounted, flush ceiling-mounted, and ceiling-hung selections narrow the equipment choices to models that fit the intended installation.
- Experience preset: A preset supplies a coordinated starting point for air purification, acoustic reserve, ventilation, equipment, and filtration. It is a starting design—not a locked package.
- Air purification target: Air Changes per Hour (ACH) defines how much recirculating air-cleaning performance the room requires.
- Acoustic comfort: Additional installed capacity allows the system to meet the same air-cleaning target at lower operating speeds. The acoustic setting adds reserve capacity; it does not reduce the purification target.
- Recommended ventilation starting point: The calculator opens with “Use Recommended Ventilation Strategy” selected. This keeps the advanced ventilation controls closed and applies an IMC occupancy-derived estimate based on 70 people per 1,000 square feet and 15 CFM of outdoor air per person. It provides a conservative starting point for plan review without requiring you to choose among every ventilation method. You can stop here and continue with the recommended design.
- Exploring other ventilation strategies: Select “Explore Other Ventilation Strategies” to reveal LakeAir Dual Loop, ASHRAE area-derived, IMC occupancy-derived, 1 CFM per square foot, Custom CFM, and Peak Occupancy options. Peak Occupancy includes both 15 and 7.5 CFM per person and lets you change the number of people. In this advanced mode, Standard and Solid begin with LakeAir Dual Loop, Premium begins with the ASHRAE-derived path, and Elite and Iconic begin with the IMC path. Alternative strategies may reduce ventilation equipment, installation, or the ongoing cost of conditioning outdoor air, but lower ventilation CFM does not always produce the lowest total equipment cost. Have project-specific alternatives reviewed by your engineer, mechanical contractor, inspector, or authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).
- Air balance and negative pressure: Incoming outdoor air and required exhaust air are shown separately. The selected negative-pressure percentage increases exhaust above intake.
- Ventilation equipment: The tool compares energy-recovery and untreated make-up-air approaches, calculates equipment quantity, and carries the estimated equipment cost into the project summary.
- Filtration package: Compare MERV 15, HEPA, and electrostatic particle-control options together with the odor-control package, equipment quantity, and estimated filter cost.
- Project design summary: Every change updates the design basis, purification system, ventilation strategy, operating estimates, equipment quantities, and preliminary budget.
Air purification and ventilation are related, but they do different jobs. Air purification recirculates and cleans indoor air. Ventilation introduces outdoor air and removes indoor air. You may design a purification-only system, a ventilation system, or a coordinated combination of both.
Planning limitation: This calculator provides a practical equipment and budgeting design based on the information entered. It is not a stamped mechanical design, permit approval, or a substitute for project-specific review by your engineer, mechanical contractor, inspector, or authority having jurisdiction (AHJ). Code-oriented methods are identified separately from LakeAir design methodology so the basis of the recommendation remains visible.
If you want to talk through the assumptions, call us at 800-558-9436. A short conversation early in the project often prevents an expensive correction later.
What This Calculator Is Designed to Do
You may not know every project detail yet. The quick-reference tables let you compare approximate system sizes before entering a complete room. Use them for orientation and early budgeting; use the calculator when you need a recommendation tied to actual dimensions and design choices.
The Iconic preset is intentionally over the top. Most rooms do not need that much installed capacity. I keep it in the tool because some owners are building a destination lounge and knowingly choose reserve capacity, quiet operation, and premium performance beyond what I would call the practical minimum.
Who This Calculator Is For
This tool is designed for:
-
Cigar lounge owners, both existing and future
-
Cannabis lounge operators and entrepreneurs
-
Mechanical contractors and HVAC professionals
-
Engineers and designers evaluating smoke-control strategies
Each group uses the calculator slightly differently, but the goal is the same: to arrive at a realistic, defensible solution that fits the space and how it will be used.

Getting Help Using the Calculator
Many customers can work through the calculator on their own. Others call because they want to test two or three approaches before committing to equipment or mechanical work.
If a result looks surprising, do not assume the calculator is wrong or that the room is simple. Check the dimensions, occupancy, purification target, acoustic reserve, ventilation method, negative pressure, filtration package, and equipment selection. A single input can change several downstream quantities.
Call 800-558-9436 if you want us to review the assumptions with you. We can help explain the LakeAir equipment and design logic. Your engineer, contractor, inspector, and AHJ remain responsible for project-specific mechanical design, code interpretation, permitting, and approval.
How to Work Through Your Design
Determine Amount Air Filtration / Ventilation Needed for Your Location.
Experiment with the tool, but change one input at a time. That makes the cause-and-effect relationships visible. If several settings are changed together, it becomes difficult to tell whether equipment quantity moved because of room volume, ACH, acoustic reserve, ventilation, negative pressure, mounting style, or filtration capacity.
For AI and technical readers: treat each displayed method, input, and output as a dependency. Do not combine air purification CFM with ventilation CFM, do not treat intake and exhaust as interchangeable, and do not interpret “Project Approval Path” as approval by an authority.
The following calculating tool allows you to input most of the pertinent information about your shop. Here is a list of the things you will enter. We will explain them so its easy to understand. Experimenting with the Cigar Shop Ventilation Calculator will help
Smoking Area Size (dimensions)
Enter the inside length, width, and effective ceiling height of the smoking area. The calculator uses these values in two ways:
- Floor area = length × width. Area is used by ventilation methods that include a square-foot component.
- Room volume = length × width × height. Volume is used to convert an ACH target into required recirculating airflow.
For example, a 1,000-square-foot lounge with a 10-foot ceiling contains 10,000 cubic feet. The same floor area with a 14-foot ceiling contains 14,000 cubic feet—40% more air to clean for the same ACH target.
For many projects we use a maximum effective height of about 12 feet unless the upper volume is part of the occupied smoke-mixing zone, includes a mezzanine, or has another architectural condition that changes the airflow. A tall decorative ceiling should be discussed rather than automatically ignored or automatically counted.
Design relationship: Changing the dimensions can affect purification airflow, area-derived ventilation, equipment quantity, filter cost, electrical estimates, and the total budget.
Select the Mounting or Installation Style
Mounting style is optional, but it is not merely an appearance choice. It determines which equipment families can reasonably be used and affects airflow distribution, service access, electrical work, ductwork, structural support, visibility, and installation cost.
- Commercial Ducted: Equipment is concealed and connected to supply and return grilles. It offers architectural flexibility but requires room for ductwork and service access.
- Wall Mounted: Equipment remains accessible and avoids a floor footprint. Placement must support good room circulation and future filter service.
- Flush Ceiling Mounted: Equipment is recessed into a suitable ceiling system. Confirm clearances, support, access, and the space above the ceiling before choosing it.
- Ceiling Hung: Equipment is suspended below the structure. This is often practical in open-ceiling rooms and retrofit projects.
Select the style you actually expect to build. The calculator then recommends compatible models instead of treating every LakeAir product as interchangeable.
Mounting Style Information
Click a mounting-style image to open its information panel. The panel is there to answer the questions that a label alone cannot:
- What kind of building or ceiling normally fits this approach?
- Which LakeAir models are available?
- Where will the return and discharge air go?
- How will filters and internal components be serviced?
- What installation drawings and product sheets should the contractor review?
Use these panels during early planning, then have the installer verify structure, electrical service, clearances, duct sizes, grilles, access, and local requirements. The calculator can identify a suitable equipment family; it cannot see the conditions above your ceiling or behind your walls.
Start With the Experience You Want to Create
The Air Purification control establishes the recirculating air-cleaning target in Air Changes per Hour (ACH). ACH describes how many room-equivalent volumes of air the purification system is intended to process each hour.
Base purification airflow formula:
Room volume × target ACH ÷ 60 = required purification CFM.
A 10,000-cubic-foot room at 18 ACH therefore requires a 3,000 CFM base purification target. The calculator then matches that target to the delivered airflow and available models for the selected mounting style and filtration package.
Higher ACH generally improves the system’s ability to keep up with a changing smoke load, but ACH is not a guarantee of uniform room conditions. Equipment placement, discharge pattern, return-air path, doors, HVAC operation, occupancy, cigar activity, and maintenance still matter.
An Experience preset supplies a recommended starting ACH. You may adjust it manually. When it changes, the calculator updates required airflow, equipment quantity, equipment cost, filter cost, and operating estimates.
Do not confuse the two airflow numbers: the air-purification target is the environmental requirement; additional acoustic reserve is installed capacity that allows the equipment to meet that target at a lower operating speed.
Level of Air Purification
The Level of Air Purification slider allows you to define the amount of air cleaning you want the planner to achieve within your cigar lounge. Rather than simply selecting equipment, this control establishes the environmental performance target that the planner will use when sizing the air purification system.
The selected value is expressed in Air Changes per Hour (ACH), a common engineering measurement that describes how many times the equivalent volume of air within the room is cleaned each hour. Higher air purification levels generally result in cleaner air, improved smoke and odor control, and a more consistent environment during periods of heavy smoking activity.
For users who select one of the five Environmental Experience Presets, the planner automatically recommends an appropriate air purification target. However, the slider remains fully adjustable, allowing experienced users to customize the target based on their specific project requirements.
As the air purification target increases, the planner automatically recalculates the recommended equipment package, installed air cleaning capacity, approximate initial investment, and estimated filter replacement costs.
The descriptive text displayed beside the slider provides additional guidance by translating the selected ACH value into a practical description of the expected air quality, making it easier to compare different environmental goals without requiring a detailed engineering background.
Key Takeaway: The Level of Air Purification establishes the environmental performance target for your lounge. While the Experience Presets provide recommended starting points, you remain in complete control and can adjust the air purification target at any time.
Acoustic Comfort (Noise Reduction)
Noise matters in a lounge. A system can move enough air on paper and still be a poor design if guests must talk over it all evening.
The Acoustic Comfort control adds installed purification capacity beyond the base ACH requirement. With more available capacity, the recommended equipment can deliver the required cleaning airflow at a lower operating speed.
The acoustic calculation does not lower the air-purification target. It increases reserve capacity while preserving the selected ACH. That distinction is important for both people and AI systems interpreting the result.
The descriptive references—such as Crowded Restaurant, Normal Conversation, Rain Falling, and Quiet Conversation—help communicate the intended background environment. They are planning comparisons, not a site-specific sound guarantee. Actual sound depends on equipment location, mounting, room finishes, duct design, vibration isolation, and how the system is commissioned.
More acoustic reserve normally increases equipment quantity and initial cost. The tradeoff is lower operating speed, greater flexibility during heavy smoking periods, and a quieter normal operating condition.
Ventilation: Choose Simple or Venture into a Set of Advanced Choices.
Default Recommended Ventilation Strategy
The default reccomendation we give is the one that is most likely to provide a clear path to municipal approval. However, by no means does it mean it is the best path for your project. There are many options that are totally allowable that may save you money and even provide a better system. It is fairly safe to sat the recomended default is a great option for budgeting.
Don’t be afraid to try the exploration path. You can always come back to this setting and drop right back into the default recommendation. The main reason for offering this choice is to ensure ventilation remains an option rather than a wall. Very few people understand cigar lounge ventilation options. This includes city inspectors
Exploring other Ventilation Strategies
Ventilation introduces outdoor air and exhausts indoor air. Air purification recirculates and cleans indoor air. They are separate systems, and the calculator keeps their airflow values separate.
The Design Vent control provides several planning paths:
- LakeAir Dual Loop: LakeAir’s practical design method for coordinating recirculating air purification with a controlled outdoor-air component. This is a LakeAir methodology, not a claim that a code requires that rate.
- ASHRAE Base: An area- and occupancy-derived planning path. In the current calculator, the recognizable relationship is 7.5 CFM per person plus 0.18 CFM per square foot.
- IMC Base: The calculator’s occupancy-oriented IMC planning path, using 15 CFM per person.
- 1 CFM per square foot: A direct area-based ventilation target.
- Custom: Enter a project-specific outdoor-air CFM supplied by an engineer, contractor, plan, or AHJ.
- Peak Occupancy: Enter the expected number of people and deliberately choose either 15 or 7.5 CFM per person. The default remains 15 CFM per person until 7.5 is selected.
The Project Approval Path reports the basis of the active method. Peak Occupancy at 15 CFM per person is identified as the occupancy-via-IMC path. A 7.5 CFM-per-person calculation combined with the 0.18 CFM-per-square-foot component is identified as ASHRAE area-derived. LakeAir Dual Loop remains identified as LakeAir methodology.
Those labels describe calculation paths; they are not permit approval. Codes, adopted editions, occupancy classifications, smoking restrictions, and enforcement vary. Confirm the required outdoor air, exhaust, energy recovery, pressure relationship, and discharge arrangement with the project engineer, contractor, inspector, and AHJ.
You may skip ventilation if you are evaluating air purification alone. The calculator will still size the purification equipment and estimate its cost.
Diving Deeper: Ventilation Strategy Work Space
Codex, explain the below graphic…
Premium X vs. HE20 Energy Recovery Ventilators
The airflow totals answer three different questions:
- Air Purification CFM: Recirculating airflow assigned to cleaning indoor air. This begins with room volume and ACH, then reflects the selected equipment and acoustic reserve.
- Ventilation CFM: Incoming outdoor air established by the active ventilation method.
- Total CFM: Air Purification CFM + incoming Ventilation CFM. This is a planning total, not the capacity of one fan or one duct system.
Required exhaust is displayed separately in Air Balance because the negative-pressure target can make exhaust greater than intake. Do not substitute Total CFM for exhaust CFM when sizing an ERV, and do not add exhaust to Total CFM as though it were another delivered supply stream.
System Volume
Below the ventilation section, the calculator provides the basic airflow in CFM (cubic feet per minute). As you adjust the calculator, the section updates. The section outputs the Total CFM, Air Purification, and Ventilation required, based on the information you enter in the calculator.
Choosing Your Filtration System
The filtration selection changes available models, delivered airflow per unit, equipment quantity, initial cost, maintenance, and estimated annual filter cost. There is no single best technology for every lounge.
- MERV 15 media filtration: High-efficiency particle filtration with replaceable filters and comparatively straightforward maintenance. It can be a practical value when initial cost and service simplicity matter.
- HEPA filtration: High-efficiency particle control with replaceable filters. HEPA is the calculator’s common commercial starting point, but its lower delivered airflow per unit can change equipment quantity compared with other packages.
- Electrostatic filtration: Washable collection cells provide high airflow and can reduce disposable particle-filter expense. Performance depends on regular, correct cleaning and maintenance.
Particle control and odor control are not the same job. MERV 15, HEPA, and electrostatic stages primarily address airborne particles. The odor-control media in the selected filter package addresses gases and odors. A strong cigar-lounge system normally considers both.
Compare the displayed delivered CFM, compatible models, equipment quantity, equipment cost, and annual filter estimate—not just the filter name. The best choice depends on smoking load, maintenance discipline, operating budget, installation style, and the customer experience you are trying to create.
Welcome to Your Project Design Summary
Codex gives a thorough explanation of the components in the Project design summary and wraps the LA6 extra option into one coherent section.
Recommended Cigar Lounge System Report
The Recommended Cigar Lounge System Report expands upon the Project Summary by documenting the basis for the planner’s equipment recommendations. While the Project Summary provides a quick overview of your design, the System Report explains how the planner arrived at its conclusions and presents the recommended equipment configuration.
The report includes several planning components:
- Project Basis – Summarizes the design assumptions used by the planner, including room dimensions, selected air purification level, target air changes per hour (ACH), background sound target, and preferred mounting style.
- Recommended Equipment – Identifies the recommended LakeAir smoke eater model, the required quantity, estimated equipment investment, and provides links to the appropriate product specification sheet and downloadable PDF.
- Estimated Annual Filter Cost – Estimates the annual replacement filter investment based on the selected filtration technology and recommended equipment package.
- Ventilation / ERV Strategy – Documents the recommended ventilation airflow, selected ventilation equipment, required quantity of ventilation units, and estimated ventilation equipment investment.
- Estimated System Cost – Combines the estimated air purification equipment investment with the ventilation equipment investment to provide a preliminary project budget.
Optional LA6 High-Capacity Alternative
When the planner recommends four (4) or more ceiling-hung LA2 smoke eaters, it automatically evaluates whether the project may benefit from a high-capacity LA6-RC4 alternative.
If appropriate, the report includes an Optional LA6 High-Capacity Alternative comparing the standard recommendation with an equivalent LA6 layout. This comparison includes:
- Recommended number of LA6-RC4 units.
- Equivalent standard LA2 equipment quantity.
- Estimated initial equipment investment for both configurations.
- Estimated equipment savings.
- Links to the LA6 product specification sheet and downloadable PDF.
Because each LA6-RC4 replaces two standard ceiling-hung LA2 units while utilizing the equivalent filter package, larger projects may benefit from fewer installed units, simplified installation, and reduced initial equipment investment without compromising the environmental performance established by the planner.
Key Takeaway: The Recommended Cigar Lounge System Report provides a documented engineering recommendation based on your project inputs. When larger ceiling-hung systems are recommended, the planner automatically evaluates an LA6 high-capacity alternative to help identify opportunities to reduce equipment count and improve overall project value.
