Carbon Filter Labeling

The section above shows all of our stocked carbon filters. except for the (6) economy filters, Each filter description lists its volume of  activated carbon or Cannablend in grams. We also list the length of the filter bed. Why is this important? With this information you can compare our filters and determine which will offer you the best performance.

Unlike many smoke eater manufacturers who prioritize sales over education, we at LakeAir take pride in providing our customers with the information they need to make informed decisions. We understand that navigating the world of air purifiers can be confusing, and we’re committed to demystifying the process by offering clear and transparent product descriptions. We don’t shy away from detailed specifications; instead, we believe they empower you to choose the air purifier that best suits your specific needs.

This commitment to transparency extends beyond basic product descriptions. We delve deeper, providing detailed comparisons between similar products within our own line. This allows you to understand the nuances between different models and make an educated choice based on factors like filter capacity, coverage area, and noise level.

In the following section, we’ll illustrate this approach by comparing the carbon filters of two similar LakeAir smoke eliminators. By providing a side-by-side comparison, we aim to equip you with the knowledge necessary to confidently select the most effective solution for your air quality needs. As always if you need help understanding this concept you can call us at 800-558-9436 and we will help you find the right odor removal product

LakeAir Carbon Filters Different than the rest

The  carbon filters you can buy from most filter manufacturers are filled with media that has been impregnated with carbon dust.  Now there are a few advantages to that type of filter. They have a very large amount of carbon  surface that is exposed. This helps them remove odors fairly quickly.

The downside to this is the volume of carbon is tremendously lower. This means the total amount of odor they can remove is much smaller. We often hear from new customers that their old Amazon models worked great for 2 weeks, but after that did almost nothing. We offer economy filters like this for the customer who are so budget minded that they are willing to sacrifice performance for a little money. But if you want a high quality carbon filter for your home air purifier, you will find it here.

The weight of the carbon in these filters is usually less than 85 grams or 3 ounces Many times the carbon dust in our competitors filters doesn’t even amount to 1 ounce of carbon. The carbon filters manufactured by LakeAir start at 300 grams

Carbon and Carbon Filters

Carbon filters are the best method to remove VOCs and 0dors from the air. LakeAir Carbon filters are made from virgin coconut shell carbon. Coconut shell carbon is one of the best carbons for removing the smells and gasses that we are likely to come across in our everyday lives. We also have other VOC absorbing media that we blend with carbon for special  applications. Many times this custom blending is done at no extra charge.

Standard (economy) Carbon Filters (carbon impregnated material)

The standard carbon filters are made from a special non-woven polyester that has been saturated with carbon dust. This process is done with different densities of carbon and pressure. The result is a lightweight material that allows air to pass through easily while allowing gasses and odors to be absorbed from the air stream. The standard carbon filter offers reasonable odor control.

These filters are lightweight and will last 2-4 months depending on the amount of VOCs that are present in the air. Once a carbon filter has absorbed all the odor it can it should be discarded. Carbon filters cannot be washed and re-used.

Granular Carbon Filters

Close up of a LakeAir carbon filter

Granulated carbon provides a higher volume of carbon for more odor and VOC absorption. LakeAir Super and Ultra Carbon Filters use a traditional carbon filter designed. One or more honeycomb cores are coated with an ultra-fine mesh to contain carbon crystals. Each core is filled with a proper amount of carbon. A second mesh is applied and the filter is mounted in a galvanized steel frame. The resulting filter provides excellent odor and VOC control.

Air passes over the irregular shaped carbon crystals. As the air tumbles over and through the carbon bed the highly reactive virgin carbon absorbs the gas molecules in the air stream. Like a standard carbon filter, a granular carbon filter should be thrown away after it has removed all the odors it can.

Carbon Filter Uses

A brief list of some of the VOCs your carbon filter will remove: acetone, formaldehyde, radon, paint fumes, pesticides, refrigerants, air fresheners, glues, spray lubricants, adhesive fumes, dry cleaning solvents, fabric cleaners, colognes, perfumes, rubbing alcohol, hair spray, tar, contact cement, benzene, toluene, xylene, methane, cooking odors, flatulence, smoke, and many many more.

About Carbon

Activated Carbon has been around since 1500 years before the birth of Christ. Egyptians used it in absorbing unpleasant odors. Activated carbon is made from carbon. The carbon is the treated with oxygen. This treatment results in cracks and fissures within the carbon structure. Millions of pores line the surface of the now activated carbon. Activated carbon has a huge surface area. As gasses pass over the surface odor molecules are trapped. This process is referred to as adsorption

LakeAir air purifiers and smoke eaters remove particles from the air. Odor which is a gaseous form remains and travels into the carbon filter. In the carbon filter the odor molecules come into direct contact with the carbon crystals and are adsorbed. Adsorption occurs as odor molecules and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are physically attracted to the surface of activated carbon. Natural electrostatic interactions inside carbon help the odor removal process. Odor molecules stick to the carbon inside the filter, tiny odor molecules bump into millions of microscopic holes in the activated carbon. These holes attract and hold the odor molecules, like a magnet.

Total adsorption does not happen all at once. It takes a certain amount of time for the odor molecule to be sucked into the carbon crystal structure. This amount of time is known as residence time. The longer the contact time between odors molecules and carbon the better . are in direct contact with the activated carbon the more of the odor is removed form the air. This is why LakeAir filters come in various lengths, with longer filters providing more contact time and better odor removal.

For the best odor removal in a single pass a longer filter bed is preferred. LakeAir smoke odor eliminators have a carbon filter bed length from 0.75 to 4.5 inches. The bed length dictates how much odor is removed in 1 pass the weight of the carbon  determines the total amount of odor that can be absorbed.

Just like any container, carbon filters can only hold a certain amount of odor. Once the filter is full, it can’t trap any more odors and needs to be replaced. Regularly changing your filters is important for maintaining clean air. This is one reason we encourage LakeAir customers to take advantage of our filter subscription program. Our plans offer reduced pricing allowing you to save money and you can easily set your own regular filter maintenance schedule.

Illustration of how carbon crystal traps odor molecules

At LakeAir, we understand that comparing air purifiers can be overwhelming. To simplify the process, we provide clear and concise information about our products’ key features. Here, we’ll focus on two crucial aspects of carbon filters: carbon weight and filter bed length.

Carbon Weight: Measured in grams (g) for precise accuracy, carbon weight indicates the total amount of activated carbon within the filter. This directly impacts the overall odor absorption capacity. For example, the MAX Guard HEPA carbon filter contains 1000 grams (approximately 2.2 pounds or 35 ounces) of carbon, while the MAX Guard HEPA-120 boasts 2000 grams (approximately 4.4 pounds or 70 ounces). This signifies that the MAX Guard HEPA-120 can capture twice the total amount of odor compared to the MAX Guard HEPA.

Filter Bed Length: The filter bed length refers to the depth of the carbon layer within the filter. This directly correlates to the amount of odor removed in a single pass of air. The MAX Guard HEPA features a 1.5-inch filter bed, while the MAX Guard HEPA-120 boasts a 3.0-inch bed. Consequently, the MAX Guard HEPA-120 will remove odors twice as fast as the MAX Guard HEPA due to its longer contact time with airborne molecules.

By understanding these key metrics, you can make informed decisions when choosing the most suitable smoke removal system for your needs. Remember, a higher carbon weight and longer filter bed length generally translate to greater odor removal capacity and efficiency.

Custom Carbon Filters

Customizing the media blend within a filter is no problem. In most cases there is NO extra charge. If you know what media blend you need we can order the proper products and add them to your LakeAir carbon filters. If you don’t know exactly what blend you need, let the customer service people at LakeAir know what VOCs you need to remove. We will contact our media manufacturer and they will prescribe and exact media blend for your project.

Custom Carbon Filter Sizes

If you have a unique application for VOC removal and you need custom carbon filter sizing, just ask your LakeAir rep for pricing. We have the ability to create both standard and granular carbon filters to fill your needs. There maybe minimum order requirements for custom sizing.
